Notes (September 5, 2026):
• ChessArchive, TWIC, ChessBites and Lichess remain among the most actively updated large free sources for human games.
• Lumbra’s Gigabase is currently one of the largest high-quality curated free databases (OTB + Online), although monthly updates are temporarily delayed.
• Chessmont offers a very large merged high-Elo dataset; Ajedrez Data provides clean OTB and correspondence collections.
• CCRL and TCEC are the primary free sources for engine games under standardized conditions.
• Many older collections (KingBase, MillionBase, Caissabase mirrors, annotated historic sets) remain valuable for study even if no longer actively updated.
• Always respect site terms of use, especially regarding commercial redistribution of annotated material.

If you have a personal website with free PGN collections that should be included, please share the URL so it can be added.
